It sucks if you have to hammer out a presentation in 15 minutes because you forgot homework for a college class If you are directly transforming journal articles and papers to a presentation then there is no way that is a suitable presentation We use beamer a lot - the journal articles and working papers exist as latex already anyway, so it's mich easier to make the slides for working grip meetings or conferences with what we have than deal with getting the content transcoded. In LaTeX it is much easier to add text than to add a figure and place it, so obviously the former becomes more common: it is literally encouraged by the fact that you are using LaTeX, which is a typesetting tool, not a graphic design tool People who put too much text or equations on a slide with latex do the same in PowerPoint.
